Background
The historical picture of insulin only being initiated in primary care is a thing of the past. Rising numbers of people with diabetes, and increased use of insulin to achieve HbA1c targets, has meant that many primary healthcare professionals are developing skills in insulin initiation and management. For this to be a reality, opportunities are needed to not only access formal education but also to keep up to date on new insulins, NICE guidance on management of blood glucose levels, practical use of insulin devices, and how to use insulin regimens in different ways to achieve optimal glycaemic control.
